How did you develop your interest or fascination with gynecology ?
I was first exposed to gynecological situations at age eleven.
My mom worked full time and went to graduate school as well. As a result
I spent quite a bit of time with relatives and friends. My favorite
relative was cousin Sara.
I had a serious crush on Sara, she was a very cute brunette in her mid-20s, and I spent as much time with her as
possible. Sara was a family planning and women’s health nurse
practitioner. She ran a local women’s health clinic and actually had me
stay there at the clinic with her on many occasions. Although at age
eleven I had little interest in sex I was fascinated by the exam tables,
equipment, and instruments.
Sara never hesitated to explain anything I asked questions about. She
also provided most of the sex education I learned while growing up.
Speculums were extremely interesting to me and I even got Sara to show

Anyway, during my explorations, trying to stay out of sight and out of
everyone’s way, I discovered a bathroom that co-joined to exam rooms -
one on either side. The bathroom wasn’t used due to plumbing problems
but it did have a small, about 8″ x 10″, door cut into each wall so that
urine specimens and other material could be passed through. I quickly
found that the little doors didn’t quite seal completely so that a
small, but adequate, view of the exam rooms could be seen.

A few days after my discovery I worked up the nerve to enter the

After about 15 minutes a girl, around age 19, came into one of the rooms
and began undressing. As I watched, scared to death of getting caught,
she removed every stitch of clothing she had on. This was my first view
of a completely naked female. She quickly put on a cotton gown that had
been lying on the exam table, then stood waiting for the nurse.
A few minutes later Sara came in, with medical records and ink pen, and
began asking all kinds a personal questions - medical history, periods,
birth control, sexual practices, and gynecological questions. A short
time later she had the girl sit up on the exam table and began the exam.
After the usual ears, eyes, nose, etc. exam, Sara lowered the front of
the girl’s gown and began looking, poking, and feeling about her
breasts. Next came the abdominal exam. After this Sara told the girl
that she would now be doing the pelvic exam and helped the girl into the
stirrups. I watched the whole procedure absolutely fascinated. From my
position I could see Sara and the lower portion of the girl, but not the
girl’s face.
Sara’s face was no more than a few inches from the girl’s vaginal area
as she began the exam. Sara used her fingers to spread the girl’s labia
and to push and probe the various surfaces. I knew very little about
female anatomy at that time so I didn’t really know what the purpose of
this was. Sara went on to do a speculum exam. I couldn’t believe that a
big metal instrument like that could actually go inside a girl - but it
did.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t see down inside the speculum.
Next, Sara put some clear jelly on her fingers and slid them into the
girl’s vagina. Sara moved her fingers all around inside then slowly
withdrew them. The last part of the exam was a rectal - with one finger.
The girl apparently didn’t like this much because her hips flexed upward
as Sara’s finger entered her anus. Sara removed her finger then took
some tissue and wiped away the jelly from the girl’s vaginal and rectal
area.
I was able to observe two more exams that day. During the next two years
I saw many more.
